Caribbean Urban Forum 2014

CUF 2014 Barbados

“Placemaking”

Placemaking puts people at the heart of the planning process and empowers communities to shape the future of the places they live in.  Engagement and participation are key to this integrated approach that seeks to create better places for living: walkable streets; welcoming public spaces; lively neighbourhoods and, crucially, planned with people in mind.

The current economic crisis, over reliance on fossil fuels, and climate change have created opportunities – indeed, imperatives – to build resilient places and communities that can readily adapt to the many challenges and impending changes.  The way in which we, as urban and spatial planners, respond to these opportunities through spatial analysis and urban design frameworks will be pivotal in achieving long term development planning goals.
